What to Check Before Signing an Ausbildung Contract in Germany

13 October 2026

No sign-in required.

Embarking on an Ausbildung (vocational training) in Germany is an exciting step toward building your career. However, before you put pen to paper on your Ausbildung contract, it’s important to carefully review several aspects to protect your rights and understand your commitments.

1. Verify the Training Content and Duration

Make sure the contract clearly states the occupation you will be trained in and the planned duration of the training. Ausbildung programs typically last between two to three and a half years depending on the profession.

2. Check the Remuneration (Ausbildungsvergütung)

Your contract should specify the monthly salary you will receive during your training. This remuneration often increases annually. Confirm the exact amounts and payment dates.

3. Confirm Working Hours and Vacation Entitlements

The contract should detail your working hours per week and annual leave entitlement. In Germany, apprentices generally work 35–40 hours per week with at least 20 vacation days annually, but these may vary.

4. Look for Clauses on Probation Period and Termination

Understand the length of any probation period and the conditions under which either party can terminate the contract. Special rules apply during the probation period regarding notice.

5. Training at the Vocational School (Berufsschule)

Your Ausbildung combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction at a vocational school. Check how days at Berufsschule are organized, and ensure that your employer supports this.

6. Responsibilities and Support

The contract should outline your duties, but also your employer’s responsibilities to provide proper training and supervision.

7. Additional Agreements

Watch out for any non-standard clauses, such as agreements on working overtime, confidentiality, or post-training obligations. Make sure you fully understand these before consenting.

8. Language of the Contract

If your German isn’t strong yet, request a translation or assistance from someone proficient so you fully understand the contract contents.

Important Reminder:

Regulations can vary by federal state and profession. Always consult official sources such as the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or legal advisors specialized in German vocational training for guidance.

By carefully reviewing your Ausbildung contract with these points in mind, you’ll set a solid foundation for your successful training journey in Germany.
